Which Condor?

You are going to do the exercises in two parts. In the first part, you will install Condor and configure it. This will be a personal Condor--it will only run on your own computer. With this version of Condor, you will run a few jobs to make sure it works. In the second part, we will switch to a pre-installed version of Condor that will allow us to use all of the computers at the summer school as a single Condor pool. You will need to be careful to know which version of Condor you are using. While this is potentially confusing, it gives us the chance to teach you how to install Condor, and the chnace to use a real Condor pool.

We will be using Condor 6.6.10, which is the most recently released stable version of Condor. Condor has two coexisting versions at any given time. Condor 6.6.x is considered a stable release. You know it is stable because the second digit (a 6) is an even number. This is the tenth release in the stable series. It has the same features as Condor 6.6.0, but has had a number of bug fixes. Some people may think that the fact that there have been so many stable releases is a sign that Condor has a lot of bugs. However, you should think of it differently: we actively support our stable series and work hard to make sure that it is rock solid.

Condor 6.7.9 is the latest development release of Condor. You know it's a development release because the second digit (a 7) is an odd number. Development releases add new features and are more likely to have serious bugs.

The Exercises

Throughout the Condor exercises, you will be given a fair amount of guidance. In several spots, there are suggestions for "extra credit". Since you aren't being graded, there is no extra credit, but we encourage you to try them out. If you prefer, you can come back to the extra credit after you've completed the basic exercises.
