The woman said that the gorilla seems to know the gorilla is a gorilla.  When the woman gave the gorilla a toy gorilla, gorilla signed, "Me!"  The gorilla likes to look in a mirror.  The gorilla seems to know that the gorilla is looking at herself.  Even such intelligent animals as dogs and monkeys do not recognize themselves.  A child recognizes his or her own face in a mirror at about eighteen months of age.  The gorilla did so at three-and-a-half years.
