Noise

Without any extra processing the animated head was intolerably noisy. The most obvious noise was in the neck rotation since a small change in neck rotation causes a large movement of the face. Maya has almost no filtering available for attributes, so I filtered the head rotation with a cubic B-spline. That reduced the noise to a far more tolerable level. In general noise could be reduced more realistically by taking more points to compute the normal vector of the forehead.
