Shots ------- 1. The camera is moving towards the lamp which is on, and then is unplugged causing it to turn off. The first note of a somber piece of music is played, and the lamp is removed from it's resting position indicating that it is being interrupted. The movement of the camera does this also. 2. The shot uses a handheld camera following the lamp as the girl carries it out. The lighting and focus is manipulated so that attention is drawn to the lamp, as well as the side to side movement of the lamp. A closeup shot of the lamp and girl is used. 3. This shot is taken from the perspective of the lamp looking back at it's previous home, conveying a sense of sadness and longing. The shot is taken from a high angle, deliberately increasing the percieved distance from the lamps former home. The room gets darker as it gets farther away from the lamps resting place adding to the perception that the lamp is leaving the comfort of it's former home. 4. This shot follows the girl and the lamp outside in a closeup shot, the contraast between the warmth of the apartment and the cold of outside is made more apparent when the girl is affected by the wind and responds physically to the cold. 5. This shot starts showing just the sidewalk, immediately the girls feet enter the frame and then the lamp is set down in center frame. Before the lamps arrival the rustling leaves provide a sense of lack of permanence and emptiness. The lap is set down quickly and coldy with the trash, making it apparent it has been abandoned by the owner. 6. This shot shows the lamp in the foreground, and the owner moving away in the background getting more and more out of focus as she moves away from the lamp. The lack of focus on the owner indicates that while the owner is doing something it is the lamp that we are supposed to be thinking about. The lamp is watching it's owner as it is abandoned. The lamp is also shaken by the wind, giving it slightly more human characteristics. 7. This scene uses a dissolve transition to indicate a time compression from the previous scenes and shows the lamp alone in the rain and the dark to invoke feelings of sympathy for the lamp. 8. This shot is a low angle shot of the window showing the lamps previous owner with a new lamp. The view is zooming towards the apartment window. A person with a umbrella walks by, interrupting the view. The person does not indicate that he notices the lamp, and as such the lamp is alone. 9. This shot is taken from a high angle, showing the abandoned lamp on the street. It has a small glow in it, indicating that it has some life left in it. The camera is again zooming towards the subject, attempting to invoke an emotional response. 10. More zooming towards the window showing the owner and the new lamp, building on the emotional impact of the scene. The relatively quick transitions between viewing from the lamps view and the windows view does this also. 11. In this cut we are again zooming from the window to the lamp but the spark of light in the lamp is gone, indicating that the lamp has given up all hope. A person with an umbrella walks by the lamp without noticing it again. These things evoke a sense of longing and sadness in the viewer. 12. The previous owner has turned off the new lamp and has left the window. This scene is again shown zoomig towards the window from the perspective of the lamp. The owner touches the new lamp briefly and it is left in the window, taunting the old lamp with its position in life. This adds to the sense of abandonment that the old lamp must feel in the vieweres mind. 13. The shot starts out looking at the lamp from ground level, and a guy passes by the lamp like the other people at night, but he stops and turns toward the camera and makes fun of the viewer for having feelings for the lamp. He is shown from a low angle. General Stuff --------- The music used is sad and somber adding to the overall effect. The difference in colors between the house and the outside is also effective.
