The Big Data Forced Migration team at Georgetown University is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join a project that focuses on developing models for forced migration data (including social media and other organic data). The project is co-led by Lisa Singh, a professor of computer science, and Ali Arab, an associate professor of statistics at Georgetown University. The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a multi-institute collaboration between the Institute for Civic Imagination (ICI), the Massive Data Institute (MDI), and the Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM). The postdoctoral fellow will be housed at MDI. We seek a postdoctoral fellow with research interests in forced migration and big data, and/or with statistical modeling and data analytics skills and in particular, experience in Bayesian inference, hierarchical models, and computational techniques (including MCMC and variational Bayes methods) for large complex data sets. Knowledge of deep learning, and agent-based modeling is a plus. The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with Professors Singh and Arab in developing statistical models, writing and publishing research papers, and meeting with interested colleagues and students. The fellow will also give at least one seminar presentation based on their work during the fellowship, a tutorial about hierarchical Bayesian modeling for big data and forced migration, and support the overall project.

The postdoctoral fellow is a 12-month appointment to begin in the Spring 2021 semester. The candidate will have a temporary advanced scholarly appointment with a start date beginning this spring or summer, with the possibility of renewal if funding permits. The person hired in this position will receive a stipend of $75,000 - $85,000, plus health insurance coverage. He/she/they will also be provided working space and a computer.

Applicants should have a PhD in any relevant social science disciplines, computer/data science, or other related fields.
