Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Science at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences. Closing date: 15 January 2021. The Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is one of Sweden’s oldest IT departments and one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. DSV offers a stimulating research environment and strong research groups in several areas within computer- and systems sciences with well-established national and international connections to leading industrial and academic institutions. The department is located at the Kista campus and has approx. 190 employees and approx. 5000 students. Project description The position is associated with the EXTREMUM project on explainable machine learning for knowledge discovery from medical data sources. The intention is to build a novel data management and analytics framework, focusing on three pillars: (1) data integration and federated learning, (2) explainable machine learning, and (3) legal and ethical integrity of predictive models. The final product will be a set of methods and tools for integrating massive and heterogeneous medical data sources in a federated manner, a set of predictive models for learning from these data sources, with emphasis on interpretability and explainability of the models’ rationale for the predictions, while focusing on maintaining ethical integrity and fairness in the underlying decision making mechanisms that govern machine learning. The project will focus on three critical application areas: preventing adverse drug events, modeling epidemics, and preventing cardiovascular diseases. This is a collaborative effort between four research institutions: the department of Computer and Systems Sciences at Stockholm University, the Department of Law at Stockholm University, RISE Research Institute Sweden, and KTH. Main responsibilities The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in all parts of the research project with emphasis on the explainability and trustworthiness of machine learning in relation to the medical domain. This includes collaborating with all project partners, performing data analysis tasks, assessing the medical relevance and significance of the findings, developing and testing machine learning algorithms, and publishing research results. All of the above will be done in collaboration with other members of the research group. Qualification requirements Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country. Assessment criteria The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Good technical knowledge of data science with emphasis on data analysis and machine learning methods; Strong experience within medical research with focus on any of the following fields: epidemiology, biomedicine, pharmacology, neuroscience, preventive medicine, general medicine; Excellent communication skills in English and very good programming skills (e.g., in Python, Matlab, Java, or R); The applicant should be highly motivated, flexible, have good communication skills, be able to work independently as well as collaborate with other researchers and practitioners. Terms of employment The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2020-03-01 or as per agreement.
