The Institute of Computer Science at the University of St.Gallen is seeking a candidate for a PhD position in Process Mining, per March 1st, 2021 or by mutual agreement.

PhD Position with Focus on Process Mining

The Software Systems Programming and Development Chair at the Institute of Computer Science covers both the development and evaluation of software artifacts. Our research focuses on adaptive software ranging from flexible process-oriented and event- driven systems to neuro-adaptive software systems and software development tools. We put special emphasis on topics in the fields of business process management (BPM) and process engineering, including process modeling, automation and mining. Moreover, we conduct research on human and cognitive aspects in software and process engineering.

The PhD position is part of the SNF project “ProMiSE: Process Mining Support for End-users”. Within the ProMiSE project, we aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of the behavior of analysts engaging in process mining and, more precisely, in exploratory data analysis tasks. We will collect empirical evidence from practice and develop methodological guidance and software-based operational support for assisting novice analysts during process mining. The outcome of the project will not only impact the accessibility of process mining to less experienced analysts but will also bring new opportunities for teaching process mining, training practitioners, and eliciting novel requirements for process mining software.

As part of the research team you will be involved in all the activities of the project, including data collection, analysis of data derived from the interactions of analysts with process mining software, development and implementation of the operational support for process mining users. Joining the project, you will work with an international team including distinguished researchers who contribute actively to the field of process mining and have complementary expertise in other areas relevant to this project, such as business process management, information systems, and software engineering.

We are looking for you if:
- you have a master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science (or related disciplines)
- you have good programming skills and preferably software engineering experience
- background in process mining and/or data analytics is desirable
- experience in conducting empirical research (user studies) are preferable
- you have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- you are motivated to publish results of your research at leading international venues on a regular basis

Important personal competencies for the role are that
- you enjoy working on interdisciplinary topics
- you are driven by exploring boundaries and aim for research excellence
- you are motivated by both personal and team accomplishments
- you thrive with collaboration and teamwork

The University of St.Gallen commits itself to increasing the number of international and female scholars among its faculty. Therefore, we especially welcome applications from international scholars and women.

Candidates should submit their application, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, references, publications list (if available) at https://jobs.unisg.ch. The deadline for applications is December 31st, 2020.
