The current vacancy is in the Directorate for Strategy, Work Programme and Resources. Its mission is to keep the JRC strategy up-to-date and to plan and coordinate its implementation, reporting and evaluation, with respect to the work programme, resource planning, support to the Euratom Treaty, inter-institutional activity, international affairs and outreach.
As one element of the JRC's scientific development, the Directorate has established the Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS), which has been charged with the mission of investigating new research areas of relevance for European policy. The CAS provides an interdisciplinary and stimulating space where JRC scientists can engage in research in policy-relevant thematics. The Directorate also hosts the JRC HR Business Correspondent team, responsible for establishing an HR strategy directly supporting JRC 2030 strategy.

CAS is looking for a post-doctoral researcher to join the bigNOMICS project on "Big Data and Forecasting Economic Developments". The goal of the project is to explore innovative ways to measure and forecast economic activity in real time. An area of interest of the project is to use advanced natural language processing techniques to analyse text (e.g., news articles and policy-makers statements and speeches) to extract indicators that can be used to forecast economic variables. He/She will contribute to the development of the project with the aim of producing policy relevant research and publish in premiere scientific journals.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have completed or be close to completing a PhD (doctoral degree) in computer science, computational linguistic, engineering, economics, statistics, or related areas and must be able to work with large datasets.
The following competences will be considered as an asset:
- Advanced programming skills (in particular, python and java)
- Advanced knowledge of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques
- Advanced knowledge of machine learning techniques
- The postdoctoral fellow should be able to work independently and as part of a team, consisting of 4 researchers and a lead scientist.
