Call for Papers - BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making Journal Special Issue on Quality Assurance and Enrichment of Biological and Biomedical Ontologies and Terminologies

Deadline: March 1, 2020

We are now inviting original research submissions to a special supplement issue in the journal BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making (https://bmcmedinformdecismak.biomedcentral.com/), along with selected papers from the 2nd International Workshop on Quality Assurance and Enrichment of Biological and Biomedical Ontologies and Terminologies (QABBO) co-held with 2019 IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine.

The goal of this special issue is to capture recent work on quality assurance and enrichment of biological and biomedical ontologies and terminologies including but not limited to SNOMED CT, Gene Ontology, NCI Thesaurus, Chemical Entities of Biological Interest, Foundational Model of Anatomy, and Logical Observation Identifier Names and Codes. These ontologies and terminologies have served as knowledge sources for a wide range of biomedical applications including data integration and exchange, natural language processing, and decision support and reasoning. They tend to be large and regularly maintained through revisions and modifications in their lifecycle which may result in ambiguity, redundancy and modeling inconsistencies. As such, quality assurance and enrichment of these ontologies and terminologies become more and more important as they impact all the downstream applications that rely on them, and they may be used in applications that can affect patient-care such as in electronic health records and in clinical decision support systems.

The topics of this special issue include but are not limited to the following:
    - Methodologies for efficient and effective quality assurance of ontologies and terminologies
    - Algorithms for identifying errors or problematic areas within the ontologies and terminologies
    - Development and enrichment of ontologies and terminologies
    - Methods and/or tools to evaluate the quality of ontologies and terminologies
    - Review of existing methods of quality assurance of ontologies and terminologies
    - Assessment and/or usage of ontologies and terminologies in clinical trials
    - Leveraging machine learning and natural language processing in quality assurance of ontologies and terminologies
    - Applications that can assist in the quality assurance of ontologies and terminologies such as utilizing crowdsourcing methods or using visualization
- Methods and/or tools to improve the quality of ontology matching or alignment

Here is a checklist for the journal submission:
1.	Note that if the manuscript is accepted, the journal publication is subject to an open access article processing fee of $1,605 (one thousand six hundred and five US dollars). It shall be the responsibility of the author to pay this sum to the Publisher;
2.	As a submitting author, you will need to go to BMC Supplements journal submission website: https://www.editorialmanager.com/supp/ (we will notify you later once the special issue is live and ready for submission);
3.	Please follow the journal instructions when preparing the manuscript: https://resource-cms.springernature.com/springer-cms/rest/v1/content/12015678/data/v1
4.	The submission deadline is March 1, 2020.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you plan to submit a paper to this special issue or if you have any question about the special issue.
