The VLDB Endowment seeks nominations for the 2018 VLDB awards
http://www.vldb.org/awards.html
1. VLDB Early Career Research Contribution Award
This award recognizes a researcher who has demonstrated research impact through a specific technical contribution of high significance since completing the Ph.D.
(1) The award is given for a specific technical contribution and not for the researcher's accumulative contributions across diverse topics. The technical contribution must have been made after the completion of the Ph.D.
(2) The candidate should have been awarded the Ph.D. no earlier than June 30, 2010. The nomination package should include a statement from the advisor (or the department office) confirming the date of graduation of the candidate.
(3) The nomination statement (500 words or less) should consist of a brief description of the specific contribution made by the candidate and the significance of that contribution.
(4) Anyone in the community may submit a nomination. Self-nominations are not allowed.
(5) The nomination must be supported by three letters of references. The letters need to address the significance and the candidate's role in the specific research contribution cited in the nomination. Advisors, advisees, and co-authors of the nominee who collaborated on the specific research contribution cited in the nomination cannot act as references.
(6) Nominations that did not result in an award can be updated in subsequent years as long as the candidate continues to meet the constraint on the Ph.D. graduation date (i.e., at most eight years after the Ph.D.).
(7) The award carries a cash prize of USD 2000.
Previous winners of the award were Daniel Abadi (2013), Thomas Neumann (2014), Christopher Re (2015), Luna Dong (2016), and Guoliang Li (2017).
IMPORTANT DEADLINE: Nominations for the VLDB Early Career Research Contribution Award should be sent via email to the 2018 VLDB Endowment Awards Chair, Gerhard Weikum, at weikum@mpi-inf.mpg.de, no later than May 1, 2018.
2. VLDB Women in Database Research Award
This award recognizes a woman researcher who is an inspiring role model for women researchers as well as the community at large through her significant technical contributions. Additional impact in the form of community leadership will be considered a plus.
(1) A nomination statement (500 words or less) should consist of a brief description of one or more technical contributions made by the candidate and the significance of that contribution. In addition, any contribution to the broader database community may be mentioned.
(2) Anyone in the community may submit a nomination. Self-nominations are not allowed.
(3) The nomination must be supported by three letters of reference. The letters must address the
candidate's research contributions as cited in the nomination including their significance. Advisors, advisees, and co-authors of the nominee who collaborated on the research contributions cited in the nomination cannot act as references.
(4) Nominations that did not result in an award can be updated in subsequent years.
(5) The award carries a cash prize of USD 2000.
Previous winners of the award were Magda Balazinska (2016) and Tova Milo (2017).
IMPORTANT DEADLINE: Nominations for the VLDB Women in Database Research Award should be sent via email to the 2018 VLDB Endowment Awards Chair, Gerhard Weikum, at weikum@mpi-inf.mpg.de no later than May 1, 2018.
3. 2018 VLDB 10-Year Best Paper Award
There is no formal nomination process for this award, but input from the research community is welcome. A paper will be selected from the VLDB Proceedings from 10 years earlier (i.e., from VLDB 2008) that has best met the "test of time”, that is, that has had the most influence since its publication. We are especially interested in first-hand accounts of ways in which the ideas of a paper have been used in practice. If you have such information, or any other information which you believe would be of use to the committee, please send email to the chair of the 2018 VLDB Endowment Awards Committee, Gerhard Weikum, at weikum@mpi-inf.mpg.de, by May 1, 2018, at the latest.
