******** Paxata Student Travel Awards for HILDA @ SIGMOD 2016 ********
1st Workshop on Human-In-the-Loop Data Analytics, June 26, 2016.

Held in conjunction with SIGMOD 2016
San Francisco, USA, June 26th - July 1st, 2016

Thanks to generous support from Paxata, we are able to offer up to six substantial
student travel awards that partially cover costs for students to attend the HILDA
workshop that will be co-located with SIGMOD 2016 conference, taking place in San
Francisco, USA, on June 26, 2016.

*HILDA* is a new workshop that will allow researchers and practitioners to exchange
ideas and results relating to how data management can be done with awareness of the
people who form part of the processes. Keynote talks will be given by Laura Haas
(IBM Research) and Jeff Heer (UWashington). Other talks cover topics including
interactive data exploration, novel user interfaces for data management activities,
and crowd-utilization in data processing tasks.

*Paxata* is the pioneer of self-service data preparation, giving everyone who works with
today’s volumes and variety of data a business user-friendly workspace for data ex-
ploration, integration, quality, enrichment and mastering, with built-in governance and
collaboration. The Paxata platform is powered by Apache Spark, and leverages sophis-
ticated algorithms, machine learning, as well as elastic and distributed cloud computing
infrastructures to deliver modern data preparation at scale.

Each award will provide reimbursement up to a limit of US$1000, of expenses incurred in
participating in the HILDA workshop. Expenses might be student registration (for HILDA),
accommodation (during HILDA and SIGMOD), and travel to/from San Francisco.

Awardees are expected to register to the workshop and the main conference and they will
have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation. At the conference, they
will submit documentation of their expenses, and reimbursement of these (up to the limit)
will be made after the event has completed.

To be eligible for this award, the applicant must be a full-time student, who will par-
ticipate in the HILDA workshop. Any student will be ineligible for the Paxata award if
they have been granted another conference-arranged travel stipend for the conference,
such as the SIGMOD Travel Award, the Undergraduate Research Program travel support, the
Programming Contest travel support, or a stipend associated to the PhD Symposium.

Applicants do not need to have an accepted paper to be eligible. However, students who
are primary authors of an accepted paper in HILDA are especially encouraged to apply.
Other students who are involved in research closely related to the topics of the workshop
are also encouraged to apply. Applications from female and minority students are es-
pecially encouraged.

Applicants should send the following materials (in a single PDF file) to 2016@hilda.io:

(1) Cover sheet containing
- Student's full name and email address.
- Name and address of student's school.
- Advisor's full name and email address.
- Statement from the student of their enrollment status
(eg “I am a 3rd year PhD student in the Computer Science
  department at University of X”)

(2) A one-page abstract written by the student, summarizing a broad view of his/her
research interests (including indication of any publications, results so far, and also
the plans for future work), and how participation in HILDA will benefit their research.
The abstract must be written in English.

The decision on who will be be offered these awards is made by a committee consisting
of Carsten Binnig, Alan Fekete, Arnab Nandi (the three co-chairs of the HILDA Program
Committee), and David Brewster (CTO of Paxata). Applications from students or coauthors
of a member of the selection committee are allowed, however the conflicted member will
not participate in consideration of that application.
