There are several things you should consider when applying for a fellowship:
- length of the fellowship
- stipend and other benefits
- requirements (internships, job after graduation, etc)
Listed below are some popular fellowships that you might consider applying for. We also encourage you to do some research and find other fellowships that you are eligible for.
National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship
The NSF offers graduate fellowships in many areas including computer science. The fellowship is a 3 year fellowship. Be sure to check the eligibility requirements. The application can be found here and is usually due in November.
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship
The NDSEG offers a 3 year fellowship which is available to computer science graduate students. There are certain eligibility criteria that you must meet in order to be considered. The application can be found here and is usually due in December.
AT&T Labs Fellowship
The AT&T fellowship program offers a 3 year fellowship which is available to underrepresented minorities and women in computer science. The eligibility requirements can be found here. The application is located here and is usually due in January.
Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship
The Hertz fellowship offers a variety of fellowship lengths including 3 and 5 years. The application is available here and their eligibility criteria can be found here.
AAUW Fellowships
The AAUW fellowships are provided by the American Association of University Women. The fellowships aim to help women from all over the world break through barriers and pursue their dreams of obtaining graduate degrees or making an impact in their communities. There are a variety of fellowships that are offered and you can apply for. See here for details of different fellowships and deadlines.
National Physical Sciences Consortium Fellowships
NPSC's goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool including women and minorities. NPSC offers 2 kinds of fellowships, a "traditional" fellowship for graduate studies and a dissertation fellowship. Fellows are supported up to 6 years depending on a number of factors such as the type of the fellowship they apply for. See here for details such as the eligibility criteria. The application typically closes in late November.
Ford Foundation Fellowships
Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. You can apply for a predoctoral, dissertation, or postdoctoral fellowship based on your situation. See here for details such as the eligibility criteria. The application typically closes early November.
