Departmental Licensing Information

The official Microsoft 2010-2013 Campus Agreement

Windows 7

Can be installed on any departmentally owned computer. However, laptops are a problem. In order for the licensing to work the computer must remain on a campus network, which most laptops are not. If you are looking to purchase windows on a laptop, you must first have purchased the laptop with an OEM license of Windows 7 or Windows Vista already on it as UW-Madison is only eligible to use the upgrade free of charge.

The StatLab strongly recommends that you purchase Work At Home (WAH) license for laptops, even if they are departmentally owned. The StatLab will not support departmentally purchased laptops (as they are not on the supported network), so it is best to use a the WAH licensing so it does not need to be networked. In a nutshell, the WAH version is a copy of Windows that comes with a static license code. There is a nominal fee.

If you are on a departmental desktop machine at work, you are allowed Windows 7 free of charge. This is called the KMS version.

Microsoft Office 2008(mac)/2010/2011(pc)

All versions of Microsoft Office are installable on any departmentally owned machine. However, if you are using a laptop or a desktop computer at home, you must purchase the Work at Home (WAH) license for a nominal fee. The StatLab will not support departmentally owned laptops that are on the unsupported network, and strongly discourages the use of campus licensed software on them because they will require campus network access for activation.

If you are on a departmental machine at work, Office 2008, 2010 or 2011 is available free of charge. To have it installed contact lab@stat.wisc.edu.
