Printing from a Linux Netbook to Statistics Printers
This page provides an example of setting up Stat printing on Ubuntu Linux through the System Administration GUI. When connected to the UWNet wireless network, you must first
authenticate to the Stat/CSL printing network (users on the
"wired-authenticated" network do not need to take this step).
--Select
System->Administration->Printing from the Ubuntu panel
(on Ubuntu Remix, select the
Administration icon, and then the
Printing icon)
--In the
Print Configuration window, select
Server->New->Printer->LPD/LPR Host or Printer to add a new printer network-based printer
--For a UWNet wireless connection, enter print-authgw.cs.wisc.edu in the
Hostbox ("wired authenticated" connection use print.cs.wisc.edu)
--For
Queue, enter the queue identification for the printer you want to use, for example
pr1274
--For printer driver, select
generic, and in the list, select
Postscript Printer . If you want to try to get greater control of the printer, you can attempt to select drivers specific to the printer in use (like
HP LaserJet 5200 or
Xerox Phaser 6250P), though these options have not been tested.
--Right-click on the
Printer->Properties, and for
Printer Options in the Double-Sided Printing optio, select
Long Edge (Standard) from the menu, or
off for simplex (or use a simplex queue as noted below)
--This will result in a two-sided (duplex) printing output (unless you selected
off). Normally, one-sided (simplex) printing is accomplished by adding a separate print queue for the simplex version of the printer. In this case the queue identification would be
pr1274-simplex
The new printer should appear in the printing menu for Ubuntu applications. Select the new printer and test printing function.
