Public Servers in the Computer Sciences Department

Introduction

There are a number of machines in the UW Computer Sciences department that allow its users general access with a few restrictions. These machines provide certain services and access to people who would otherwise have no access. Users with appropriate access can log into these machines.

List of Servers

Machine Description Details Who can use it?
route66.cs.wisc.edu Public SSH machine It is meant primarily for users without Unix accounts (such as students taking CS 302) for transferring files. Almost anyone with a CS account.
alumni.cs.wisc.edu Alumni access machine Users with alumni accounts log in here. See also Alumni Account Policies? for more details. Anyone with a Computer Science Alumni Account.
pub-sparc.cs.wisc.edu Public Sparc/Solaris machine Users with research accounts can log in here should they require the use of a Sparc/Solaris based system. Anyone with a research Unix account.
pub-winxp1.cs.wisc.edu pub-winxp2.cs.wisc.edu Public Windows XP machines Located in the crash and burn lab (room 1355 CS), these machines are general use Windows XP machines to test and otherwise use the CSL's supported Windows XP environment. Because of the operating system, users cannot remotely log in via SSH. Almost anyone with a CS account.
