The company managed to persuade approximately 10,000 well-heeled buyers that the F355 was worth its six-figure price of entry. That's an amazing number of car sales for a specialized automaker like Ferrari. So how do the boys in Maranello top themselves when it comes to designing a successor to the F355? Simple, just make it better in every way. That means the extensive use of aluminum in the chassis, suspension pieces, and body panels for reduced weight with increased chassis rigidity. It means creating a larger interior with improved head, hip, and legroom so that people of all shapes and sizes can enjoy this prancing horse. It means offering more power from an enlarged V8 engine, and increased downforce at high speeds from a Pininfarina-penned body. The aluminum chassis not only drops the 360's weight by 200 pounds when compared to the F355, it allows the car to have larger dimensions, like a widened track and roomier cabin, which benefits both stability and creature comfort. Suspension layout remains the same upper and lower A-arm design that was utilized on the F355, but here again, the use of aluminum makes for lighter weight and a more controlled ride. A dash switch can alter the suspension's settings for a stiffer ride on weekend track days. The heart of this Ferrari is a 3.6-liter V8 engine that makes 395 horsepower and 275 foot-pounds of torque. That's a 20 horsepower improvement over the F355 and, combined with its lighter weight, allows the Modena to reach 60 mph in a little over 4 seconds. High-tech items like dual intake runners and a two-stage muffler help to keep the V8 civilized under normal driving conditions while allowing it to scream when your right foot calls for such action. Top speed hovers around 180 and the use of wind tunnel testing during development ensures that the slippery body also creates effective downforce at elevated speeds. Supple leather accented by brushed aluminum complements the 360's roomy interior, where even a set of golf bags can be squeezed behind the two multi-adjustable high-back bucket seats. Large gauges and a thoughtful center stack design contribute to the car's sense of purpose and luxury. Order your 360 with the standard gated six-speed manual transmission or the high-tech, clutchless F1 tranny that features shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. Improved for the 2000 model year, the F1 tranny works with the 360's electronic throttle control to offer quicker, cleaner shifts than in earlier models. All 360s come with stability control that uses both ABS and electronic brake distribution to keep the car in check during inclement weather or spirited driving.
