Four colors have been added. Room for four, great styling, well equipped models. Cheap-looking interior materials, unrefined engine. Chrysler's Sebring Convertible gets people excited. "Finally, a convertible that doesn't make me feel like a college kid every time I put the top down." Basically, that's what Chrysler wants its Sebring buyers to proclaim. You see, there are plenty of fun convertibles, but most of them don't offer much practicality in day-to-day life. They're either stiff-riding hot rods, like the Camaro or Mustang, or too small to be practical for people who have kids. Upon seeing this market opportunity, Chrysler went whole-hog when it debuted the Sebring in 1996. The car brought class, dignity and quite a bit of luxury to this otherwise whimsical segment, and became very successful with upscale buyers of all ages. There has been just minor retooling over the years, and 2000 is no exception, since the major redesign is scheduled for 2001. The Sebring Convertible has little in common with the Sebring Coupe. The soft top is based on the Cirrus platform and shares its chassis and drivetrain components with that sedan. Its available engine is a 2.5-liter, SOHC V6, making 168 horsepower and 170 foot-pounds of torque, and it pulls quite well at slow speeds. The four-speed overdrive automatic transaxle is the only gearbox offered, but Limiteds have the AutoStick as part of the standard-feature package. Both the JX and JXi come with four-wheel ABS (front disc/rear drum braking), while the Limited has ABS, four-wheel discs and traction control, as well as chrome wheels and electro-luminescent instrument-panel lighting. The rear suspension got tweaked this year to provide a better ride, but underneath remains the same four-wheel independent double-wishbone design. The JX has standard tuning, while the JXi and JXi Limited went the touring route. Firm-feel steering is provided for all three (as is minor understeer), and dual-outlet exhaust with a chrome-flashed tip passes gas. The 2001 Sebring will have a brand-new platform and more potent power, but between now and then, the current Sebring Convertible is one of the few true four-seat drop tops on the market.
